CONGRATS Madison and the Utah Sting!

Uncategorized

BIG CONGRATS to Madi and her softball team, the Utah Sting!  They played in their final summer tournament this past weekend, The Mizuno Classic and won!  After dropping into the loser’s bracket first thing on Saturday morning, they went on to play (AND WIN) 8 straight games to take the championship.  Along the way, Madi pitched one of her best games of the season.  Almost everything she threw seemed to be a STRIKE!  After that particular game, her arm was very, very sore and she didn’t know if she would be able to pitch again that day.  Her coach called on her a few games later to pitch against the team that beat us that morning.  Even though Madi’s arm was hurting, she pitched the game of her life!  The game ended (4-3) when Madi got the third out by throwing a wicked rise ball!  It was soooooo cool!  We are SOOOO PROUD of Madison!!!!!

Movie Night

Uncategorized

It’s been a while since I have blogged….busy, busy, busy!  Baseball, softball and more baseball and softball!  It’s our life….but we love it!

My brothers and I have been talking for years about hosting outdoor movie nights at my parent’s house.  They have an AWESOME backyard, perfect for any kind of entertaining.  Finally, we got our acts together and had MOVIE NIGHT.  We hung two large white sheets from a group of pine trees in the yard, set up the LCD Projector and surround sound (Yes, surround sound!), popped popcorn and watched a movie.  It worked out perfect!  The screen was HUGE and the weather was perfect.  Maybe even a tad too warm.  We are in the middle of a heat wave here in Utah.  By the time we began the movie at 10:00 pm, I think it was still over 80 degrees!  Here are some photos….a bit blurry for some reason, but you get the general idea!

Happy Wednesday!  Which, by the way….feels like another Monday, since we were off work (for Pioneer Day) yesterday!

Some MAD DOG Love!

Uncategorized

Let me introduce you to someone……MAD DOG a.k.a. Madison!

Madi_batting

I know you already know her, as she is no stranger to my blog….BUT, you mostly know her as Madison or Madi…..not MAD DOG!  Madi started playing Bonnet Ball (girl’s softball) when she was about 7 years old.  She made the 8 and under All Star Team that year, even thought she was only 7.  She played "rec" softball for a few years, until a "comp" team was formed with the girls she played with….I think she was around 10 at the time.  Somewhere along the line, Madi’s coaches and teammates started calling her "Madi McGuire", after major leaguer Mark McGuire because Madi always wore #25 (like Mark) and because she also played 1st base.  Somehow, "Madi McGuire" turned into MAD DOG!  Now, almost everyone calls her MAD DOG during softball games….some have even shortened it to DOG, which drives Grandma crazy!  It is not uncommon to hear a parent (even another Mother) cheer "Let’s go Dog" from the stand when Madi is up to bat, or even pitching!  Carl even calls her "DOG" away from the field…..which I must admit, drives me crazy sometime!  I worry that people don’t know that is her nickname!  LOL!

Anyway, Madi’s team Utah Sting traveled to Boise this past weekend to play in a tournament.  They did AWESOME, going undefeated into the championship game, beating our new rivals "The Sooners" during bracket play.  Unfortunately, the Sooners met us in the championship game (they won the "losers bracket"), and ended up beating us for the 2nd weekend in a row.  BUMMER!  They are one of those teams, that just tend to rub you the wrong way.  I hope we don’t meet up with them again, anytime soon!

MAD DOG was AWESOME!  She has been nursing a broken toe, and has been unable to pitch for the last 3 weeks, but they started her out slow this weekend.  She pitched in part of 2 games and then pitched in the championship game.  She did so well!  You would have never known that she had a three week break from pitching!  GO MADI!  She looked as strong as ever!  Madi had a great tournament at the plate as well, hitting a monster double in the championship game that started a rally for us, and also hitting an RBI that tied the game.  SOOOOO COOL!

We arrived home LATE Sunday night, Madi had one day rest and then it was off to practice and a pool party at one of her teammates house today.  Tomorrow is another off day, due to the holiday, but the State Tournament begins on Thursday.  GO STING!

I’m not sure if I have mentioned this before, but Madi’s team has 9 or 10 different uniforms, 3 different batting helmets, and 3 different pairs of cleats….He coach is a freak about things matching….LOL!  This is a picture of the "Cammo" uniforms….Madi is #25

Our trip to San Diego was AWESOME!  We left just after Tyson’s last final and hopped on the plane.  Unfortunately, Tyson wasn’t feeling so well, and spent most of the flight and that night shivering and shaking with a high fever, headache and earache!  Yuck!  As soon as we checked into the hotel, Tyson took a nap while I went in search of a grocery store to find some meds.  After a nice nap and some good meds, Tyson was feeling well enough to meet some friends for dinner in the hotel restaurant.  He got to bed early and had a good night sleep.  Saturday was spent at the ball field…..this ballfield:

It is kind of hard to tell….because of the "June Gloom", but the outfield looks out over the ocean.  It was sooooo beautiful!  Tyson spent the morning being timed on his 60 yd. run, his arm velocity from the outfield, his batting style, and his catching ‘pop time’.  He still wasn’t feeling 100%, but he still did well.  By about 2pm, his fever had broken and it was time to play some games.  He played on Saturday night and again on Sunday afternoon.  We had about 4 hours of free time on Sunday morning, so we decided to take a trip to Coronado Island  It was BEAUTIFUL!  We spent some time walking along the beach in the ocean, searching for shells for Madison and just relaxing.  What a beautiful place!  We made it home late Sunday night….well early Monday morning!

While T and I were in San Diego, Madi and Carl were in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.  They had a great time and the Utah Sting did well and won a bunch of games, but they ended up losing early on Saturday morning…..so Carl and Madi were able to get home at a reasonable time on Saturday night.  Sadly, Madison broke her toe while she was warming up to pitch on Saturday morning.  She had to miss both games on Saturday morning.  The team was supposed to leave for Cedar City, Utah on Monday morning for the Utah Summer Games, but Madi had to stay home…..she needs to stay off her toe for as least two weeks, or it will never heal and she will continue to break it!  What a bummer!  Even though Tyson got sick and Madi broke her toe….I think a great time was had by all of us!

The end of a chapter….and the beginning of a new one!

For the last 13 years I have had at least one child attending school at St. Olafs Catholic School.  Tyson started in Kindergarted and attended through 8th grade.  Madison was in the very first Pre-K class at St. Olafs, and just graduated from 8th grade this last Friday.  Phew!  It is going to be so weird not driving to St. Olafs every morning at 7:50….going through the dreaded carline!  BUT…..I am so excited for Madison and this new chapter in her life….HIGH SCHOOL at Judge Memorial Catholic High School.  She is sooo ready to be there!  10 years at the same school can get pretty old!  I know Madi has some wonderful memories from St. Olafs that will last a lifetime, but I know she is soooo looking forward to making new memories at Judge.  I am thankful that she will have Tyson there with her next year….the big brother senior that can look out for her and show her the ropes…..and give the "evil eye" to any boy that dares talk to Tyson’s little sister!  ÜÜ

CONGRATULATIONS MADISON!  You have made us very proud and we are so excited to watch as you embark on your high school journey!

WE LOVE YOU MADISON!!!!

In other news…..Madison and Carl left for Steamboat Springs, Colorado yesterday morning for a softball tournament.  So far, they have played two games (which they WON!) in rain/snow/sleet!  Yuck!  As of this morning, skies were clear and the sun was shining brightly!  I hope it warms up for the girls!  Tyson should be finishing his last final right about now, and then we are off to the airport for San Diego for a Baseball Showcase.  This is where we will BE.  How cool does that look!?!?!?!

TGIF!  I hope you all have a WONDERFUL weekend!

Tournament Time!

Uncategorized

The first and second rounds of the 3A State Baseball Tournament begin tomorrow! WOO HOO!  Since the Judge Memorial Bulldogs are the #1 seed in Region 10, we get to host the first two rounds at our field.  We play Hurricane tomorrow morning at 10:00 am.  Win or lose, (WIN!) we will play again at 4:00 pm.  We are kicking things off tonight with a Pep Rally and BBQ for the players and their families.  I spent the night putting together a few treats for the boys…….Powerade with tags that say "Unleash that BULLDOG POWER", some candy bars covered with paw print paper, and then some Big League Chew(ing Gum)!

On another note, Madi’ had her 8th grade play last night.  It was very cute, and Madi did awesome!  Didn’t forget her lines or laugh!  The photos didn’t turn out too great (bad gym lighting), so I’m going to try and mess with them a bit before posting.

TGIF!  GO BULLDOGS!

A few weeks ago, Tyson’s baseball coach mentioned that the Salt Lake Tribune wanted to do a story on Tyson and his friend Joe.  They met each other when they were 2 years old at daycare.  Since that time they have been best friends.  They have been playing baseball, basketball and football together FOR YEARS!  Joe is a pitcher and Tyson is a catcher….they have always played on the same team, with the exception of a two year period when they each played on different teams, but still played together occassionally.  They share a great bond and a love for the game, which is definitely apparant when you watch them.  They are both having great seasons, and the Judge Bulldogs have clinched the region championship.  They host the first round of the state playoffs next Saturday.  GO BULLDOGS!  Here is the link to the article:  Salt Lake Tribune Article  Here is the article in full:

Proven chemistry
Judge pitcher and catcher are close friends who have grown up together playing baseball

As best friends since preschool – the two Judge Memorial baseball players were in the same tots group in Davis County – Joe Pond and Tyson Moll have spent a lot of time together. From little league all-star games to today, as Bulldogs teammates, the two are, and have always been, inseparable.
Pond is on the mound and Moll catches.
The juniors are having breakout seasons and hoping to lead Judge back to the state championship game for a second consecutive year.
And both have heard all about the high expectations that come with playing for the Bulldogs, before. On a near-daily basis, the two are reminded of the great Judge athletes ahead of them and the talented crop of sophomores coming up through the ranks.
Still, Moll and Pond try to take the season one game at a time, avoiding fanfare as much as possible. With standout multi-sport athletes like Cort Dennison and Dominique Parker in the spotlight in the early part of the season, the recognition, or lack thereof, hasn’t fazed Moll and Pond, who also keep busy in the weight room and playing different sports year-round.
In fact, the 17-year-olds filled important roles on Judge’s junior varsity football team this season, with Pond at quarterback and Moll, who got also some varsity time, at fullback and linebacker. They also played basketball together their freshman and sophomore years, but have decided to devote more time to developing their respective roles on the football and baseball teams.
"We try to separate ourselves. The class above us had a lot of talented athletes and we have always lived under that shadow," Pond said. "I have confidence in Tyson on the field and I’m pretty sure he feels the same way about me. We have fun out there, but we work hard and want to win. "
The hard work is paying off. Judge is in a comfortable spot, at the top of Region 10. Judge is a young team, with only two seniors but with a solid supporting cast of juniors and sophomores. Moll bats fourth and Pond is right behind, in the five-spot. The two are known as deep hitters who not only bat for average, but who also hit home runs and load up on RBIs.
"This year Joe has been throwing the ball really well. There have been games where he’s untouchable. I think I have pretty good arm strength to complement Joe’s pitching and I can see where the ball needs to go," Moll said. "Right now as a team, we just go out there and play ball. Of course I’d love to get back to the championship game, but there’s no need for anybody on this team to get ahead of themselves."
While Steve Stahl and Jaxon Myaer are the team’s leaders, Moll and Pond credit their own success in part to learning from those seniors whose differing approaches to baseball have helped steer the program in the right direction. From Myaer’s free-spirited approach to Stahl’s blue-collar work ethic, the juniors often exhibit similar leadership characteristics. The two also have big-game experience that will come into play once the playoffs begin, later this month.
Juniors like Moll and Pond have made his coach Jeff Myaer’s job a whole lot easier. As a Centerville-area product, Myaer had known about the players and their hard-nosed style of play dating back to their elementary-school days at St. Olaf’s in Bountiful.
"When you don’t have to coach effort, it’s fun to be a coach. They’re just good kids and they literally do everything together" Myaer said. "There are times when Tyson will tell Joe to get the ball out of the dirt and then Joe will tell him to do better at blocking the ball. In any other situation, those kinds of directions would be left up to the coaches. When you’re watching those two out there, it’s like watching brothers interact."
Judge wraps up its season with road games at rivals Park City and Juan Diego, and Pond thinks the Bulldogs have put in a lot of hard work in the off-season and are ready to make another deep run. The taste of playing in a championship game last year has the team excited to make it back, and play even better than the previous season.
"We don’t come out with an arrogance or swagger, but I’d say it’s an expectation that we will perform and every player will do their part," Pond said. "As a team, we’re selfless and that’s what I love about this program. At first Tyson and I kind of got thrown into the fire because there wasn’t much of a program at Judge back then, but I think it really helped us to be in a position now where we know we can win the state championship."

    * Judge’s Joe Pond, a pitcher, and catcher Tyson Moll have been close friends since they were 3-years old.
    * Their longtime friendship improves both of their games, says Bulldog coach Jeff Myaer, because of their above-average communication.
